Cataracts | 5 Early Warning Signs | Eye Associates of Tallahassee

Many people believe that if there was a problem with their eyes, they would notice before it severely impacted their vision. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Some of the most common eyes diseases like cataracts can develop so slowly and painlessly that people don’t notice the symptoms early on.

A cataract is formed when protein builds up in the lens of the eyes and causes it to become cloudy. Cataracts are the biggest cause of blindness worldwide and the most common cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 40.

The best way to protect yourself from cataracts is to become familiar with some of the most common symptoms. Here are five early warning signs of cataracts:

1) A Change In Vision

Often the first thing patients will notice is that something just seems different or off about their vision. They may suddenly not be able to see certain things from a distance that they used to be able to see clearly.

2) Double Vision

Double vision in one or both eyes is a common symptom of cataracts.

3) Cloudy Vision

Patients with cataracts have often described the experience as similar to staring through a piece of glass. This change happens slowly so you may not notice it until your vision becomes significantly blurred.

4) Lens Discoloration

One of the most noticeable signs of cataracts is an obvious discoloration in your eyes. Cataracts can cause a yellow or brownish tint to form on your eyes.

5) Poor Night Vision

Another common symptom of cataracts is the forming of halos or a glare around lights. This can make nighttime driving difficult because the glare of other cars can make it difficult to see.

Some patients are able to manage the symptoms of their cataracts in the beginning by using a stronger glasses prescription or eye drops. However, these are temporary solutions. If your vision becomes seriously impacted and your daily activities are limited due to your cataracts it is probably time to consider cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery is a relatively simple and short procedure that can dramatically improve the quality of your life. To find out more about cataract surgery and to learn how you can manage your cataracts, schedule an appointment with one of our doctors to
